Bands grouped together in geographical cluster because of vaguely
similar sounds obviously miss some nuances. So while Cantique Lépreux
is classified with their brethren as Metal Noir Quebecois they’re at
one end of the spectrum compared to Délétère or Forteresse (with whom
they share members). While the latter two are often raving and furious
Cantique Lépreux is a more atmosphere driven affair. That’s not to say
there isn’t tempo and drive here, just that it’s slightly more
tempered, and more so on Le Bannissement than on 2018’s Paysages
Polaires or 2016’s Cendres Célestes. The sound has also gotten more
polished which furthers this impression. Going back especially to
their debut I miss some of the rawness but this is a great little
album which has gotten a lot of plays this year. Recommended.
